The Climate in Kazakhstan is continental. In summer the temperatures average more than 30 °C (86 °F) and in winter average 20 °C (4.0 °F).

Capital and Largest City

The capital of Kazakhstan is Astana, which has a population of 835,000. Astana is the second-largest city in Kazakhstan; the largest is Almaty, the former capital, which is also a major cultural and commercial centre. Almaty has a population of 1.55 million people with a density of 2,300 people per square kilometre (5,900/square mile).

Religion

Islam is the largest religion practised in Kazakhstan, with estimates of between 47% to 70.2% of the country's population being Muslim. Ethnic Kazakhs are predominantly Sunni Muslims of the Hanafi school. There is also a small number of Shia and a few Ahmadi Muslims. Languages

The official languages of Kazakhstan are Kazakh with 5,290,000 speakers around the country and Russian which is spoken by 6,230,000 people. Both Kazakh and Russian are used on equal grounds. Other languages natively spoken in Kazakhstan are Dungan, Ili Turki, Ingush, Plautdietsch, and Sinte Romani. Literacy Rate

Currency

Kazakhstani Tenge (The tenge) is the currency of Kazakhstan. It is divided into 100 tıyn. The ISO-4217 code is KZT. The word tenge in the Kazakh and most other Turkic languages means a set of scales (cf the old Uzbek Tenga or the Tajik borrowed term tanga). The origin of the word is the Turkic teŋ- which means being equal, balance. The name of this currency is thus similar to the taka, lira, pound and peso.
