Gomel State Medical University dates back to 1990 when the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR dated November 14, 1990 No. 284 and the order of the Minister of Health of the BSSR dated November 20, 1990 No. 188, in order to ensure the training of doctors and highly qualified specialists for the most affected by the disaster on Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Gomel and Mogilev regions, in November 1990, the Gomel State Medical Institute was opened.
