Kerala Revises MBBS Fee Structure for Medical Colleges

The Government of Kerala has issued a significant order revising the MBBS fee structure for students studying in Government Medical Colleges and Self-Financing Medical Colleges across the state. Under the new order, colleges can charge tuition fees only for the prescribed academic duration of 4.5 years (54 months), in accordance with the National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines.

Key Highlights

  • MBBS fees restricted to 4.5 years (54 months) in all Government and Self-Financing Medical Colleges in Kerala.
  • The decision follows the National Medical Commission's (NMC) Public Notice dated April 7, 2026, directing all medical colleges to collect fees only for the academic duration of the MBBS course.
  • Any collection of fees beyond 4.5 years is considered non-compliant with NMC directions.

Refund of Excess Fees

The NMC also instructed the Director of Medical Education to ensure that any excess fees collected by medical colleges are refunded to students. However, the Kerala High Court has granted an interim stay on the NMC's refund directive for three months in a related case. As a result, the refund process will depend on the final judgment of the High Court.

Government Direction

The Kerala Government has directed all Government and Self-Financing Medical Colleges to strictly follow the revised fee structure and collect fees only for the 4.5-year academic duration. The Fee Regulatory Committee has also been instructed to revise fee structures for self-financing medical colleges in line with the NMC's directions.

What This Means for MBBS Aspirants

Students and parents should carefully review the revised fee policies while participating in the upcoming admission and counselling process.
