Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health was established in 1876, making it one of the oldest mental health institutions in India. It is a premier autonomous institute under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and is affiliated with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences as well as recognized by the National Medical Commission. The institute offers postgraduate education primarily in the field of mental health, with MD in Psychiatry being its main PG medical course (introduced in 2010), along with other advanced programs like DNB Psychiatry, M.Phil and MSc in psychiatric disciplines, providing specialized training in mental healthcare and neurosciences.
