NEET UG 2024 Hearing Live Updates: ‘Re-test is our last option’, says SC; Next hearing on Thursday, 11 July

The Supreme Court of India began hearing several pleas on Monday regarding the controversy surrounding the NEET UG 2024 medical entrance exam, seeking an order to conduct it anew. A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices J B Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra will hear a total of 38 petitions.

However, the Central government and the National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers NEET-UG, informed the apex court that canceling the exam would "seriously jeopardize" the futures of countless honest candidates without proof of a widespread breach of confidentiality.

The NTA echoed the Centre's position, stating that canceling the entire exam would be highly "counterproductive" and significantly "harmful to larger public interest," particularly to the career prospects of the qualified candidates.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) released the NEET UG 2024 re-exam results on July 1, revealing a decrease in the number of top performers to 61. According to the NTA's decision, 750 students who missed the exam will need to accept their scores before grace marks are added. Of the 1,563 candidates who were affected, 813 participated in the re-exam on June 23.

On June 13, the Supreme Court nullified the NEET 2024 results for 1,563 candidates who had been given compensatory marks due to lost time, instructing the NTA to revoke their results. The NTA informed the court about the re-exam scheduled for June 23, based on recommendations from a high-powered committee. At that time, both the NTA and the central government denied any irregularities in the exam.

This year, 67 candidates achieved the All India Rank (AIR) 1 in the NEET exam, with the results announced on June 4, ten days earlier than the scheduled date.
