The National Testing Agency has officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3, 2026, following serious allegations of paper leaks, organised cheating networks, and examination malpractice reported from multiple states across the country. The decision was announced through an official press release issued on May 12, 2026, creating major concern among over 24 lakh medical aspirants nationwide.
According to the agency, preliminary findings shared by central law enforcement authorities indicated significant irregularities and security lapses at several examination centres. After reviewing the investigation inputs, the Government of India approved the cancellation of the examination in order to maintain transparency and fairness in the national medical entrance process.
NTA stated that preserving the integrity and credibility of the examination system remains its highest priority. Officials further confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a detailed inquiry into the allegations. Strict action is expected against individuals and groups found responsible for manipulating the examination process.
The agency acknowledged the stress and uncertainty faced by students and parents due to the sudden decision. However, NTA clarified that allowing the disputed examination process to continue could have caused long-term damage to the trust associated with India’s largest medical entrance examination.
The press release also mentioned that candidates who registered for NEET UG 2026 will not need to complete fresh registrations again. Existing application forms, submitted documents and examination fees will remain valid if the examination is reconducted. Reports further suggest that students may be allotted the same examination centres that were assigned earlier, although official confirmation regarding revised exam dates and admit cards is still awaited.
Candidates have been strongly advised to rely only on official notifications released through NTA websites and verified communication channels while avoiding rumours circulating on social media. Further announcements regarding the re-examination schedule and updated guidelines are expected soon.
